Joaquin Niemann, Sebastián Muñoz collect first PGA TOUR victories, qualify for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions
Cameron Champ captures Safeway Open title for his second career victory
Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii – A win on the PGA TOUR is the only way to qualify for the TOUR’s champions-only event. With their recent wins, Cameron Champ, Sebastián Muñoz and Joaquin Niemann became the latest players to punch their tickets to the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions when the event returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui from January 1-5, 2020.
Sacramento native Cameron Champ earned his second career PGA TOUR victory at the Safeway Open with a one-stroke victory over Adam Hadwin at Silverado Resort and Spa (North) in Napa, California. The 24-year-old, who held a three-stroke lead entering the final round, made five birdies and overcame a bogey on No. 17 to hold off Hadwin and close with a 3-under 69 to finish at 17-under 271. Champ won in his second start of the season for the second consecutive season; he did so as a rookie at the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship. With the victory, Champ qualified to return to the Sentry Tournament of Champions where he finished T11 in 2019.
Sanderson Farms Championship
Sebastián Muñoz collected his first career PGA TOUR victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship when he drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff and then defeated Sungjae Im on the first playoff hole. The 26-year-old became the first Colombian player to win on the PGA TOUR since Camilo Villegas (2014 Wyndham Championship) and the 13th player to make the Sanderson Farms Championship his first TOUR win. The victory qualified Muñoz for his first trip to The Plantation Course at Kapalua to play the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier
In his third start at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, Joaquin Niemann captured his first career PGA TOUR victory when he holed a 21’ 10” birdie putt on the 72nd hole en route to a 6-under 64 to defeat Tom Hoge. Niemann’s six-stroke winning margin is a tournament record, bettering Kevin Na’s five-stroke margin from 2018. The 20-year-old became the first player from Chile to win on the PGA TOUR and joins Seve Ballesteros and Rory McIlroy as the only players born outside the United States to win on TOUR before turning 21 in the last 95 years. With the win, Niemann qualified to make his first trip to the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Maui.
Eight opportunities remain for players to qualify for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions. Here is a list of the tournaments: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Houston Open, THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, the ZOZO Championship, Bermuda Championship, World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, Mayakoba Golf Classic and The RSM Classic.
Currently, 39 players have qualified for the Sentry Tournament of Champions courtesy of their PGA TOUR victories this calendar year, including 14 first-timers.
Kapalua Plantation Course Update
Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course will officially reopen for daily-fee play on Saturday, November 23, 2019 following a nine month, multi-million-dollar enhancement project. In preparation for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions, tee times will be limited in late November and throughout December and golf carts will be restricted to cart paths only. During the nine-month project all 107 acres of fairways, tees and rough were grassed with Celebration Bermuda grass, while all greens were grassed with TifEagle Bermuda grass. A capillary concrete liner system was installed in all 93 course bunkers, allowing the bunkers to better weather heavy rain events. For a detailed, hole-by-hole breakdown of all of The Plantation Course enhancements made by architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Troon’s Design Development and Agronomy team and GOLF Channel personality Mark Rolfing, click here or visit golfkapalua.com/news_events/.
